Outpost Iraq Dubai advises families with school age children to first find a school placement before finding a house, to avoid long commuting distances.
The most popular areas for shell Expat families to live are highlighted below. The numbers correspond to the numbers shown here on the map.
1 Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim
Travelling south from the Convention Tower (Shell office), on your right are the older areas of Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. These are very attractive to expat families and consist mostly of independent villas with mature walled gardens but there are also small compounds.
2 Al Barsha
On the left side near Mall of the Emirates is Al Barsha. This area has mostly new larger homes with gardens and often a swimming pool. Roads are now being completed in this area and this area is becoming more attractive.
3 Palm Jumeirah
Palm Jumeirah is located between Knowledge Village and Dubai Media city. There are two main types of accommodation: medium-rise apartment blocks on the trunk, most with communal beach access, and expensive villas with private beaches and pools on the fronds. However, construction activities in the area may cause traffic congestion and may result in a long commute.
4 Dubai Marina
Continuing south, on the right coastal side, The Dubai Marina consists mostly of apartments and is very convenient for shops and restaurants. It is close to the beach with a lovely boulevard known as Jumeirah Beach Walk which is full of cafes and small shops etc. However, construction activities in the area may cause traffic congestion and may result in a long commute.
5 Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR)
JBR is comprised of six clusters of several high rise apartment blocks overlooking Dubai Marina and the Arabian Gulf. It is lined with retail outlets, restaurants, cafés and hotels. However, construction activities in the area may cause traffic congestion and may result in a long commute.
6 Emirates Hills, Lakes, Meadows, Springs and Jumeirah Islands
On the south side of Sheikh Zayed Road opposite the Marina are the pleasant gated community areas of Emirates Hills, Lakes, Meadows, Springs and Jumeirah Islands. These residential areas are enjoyed by families seeking a community type life in a green environment.
7 Arabian Ranches
Slightly out of town to the east is Arabian Ranches – a safe, enclosed community of villas and lush gardens. This is a very popular community for expat families and has a golf club, polo club, shops, and a (very popular) school on site. It is around a 30-minute drive from the office at the Dubai World Trade Centre, but is convenient for many of the new schools which are located out of town, such as Repton and the Gems World Academy.
There are beautiful new apartments in the Downtown Dubai Area, which is a close to the Burj Khalifa. It is also close to the office at the Dubai World Trade Centre and the Dubai Mall with many hotels, restaurant and cafés.
